Our Values

SURVIVOR-LEAD
Self-Designed Life was created by Survivors for Survivors. We believe those with lived experience bring essential wisdom, insight, and leadership to healing spaces.

CHOICE AND AUTONOMY
Healing isn't about becoming who someone else thinks you should be. We believe every person deserves the freedom to define their own life, make their own choices, and reclaim their own voice.

TRAUMA-INFORMED
We understand how trauma shapes the nervous system, relationships, identity, and decision-making, and we are committed to creating safe spaces where all are welcomed with compassion and respect.

GROWTH OVER PERFECTION
Healing is not linear. There is no "perfect survivor" and no finish line. Every step forward matters, and setbacks are part of being human.

BELONGING AND INCLUSION
Everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and valued. We recognize the historical trauma leveraged against Survivors based on culture, race, ethnicity, gender, and other marginalized identities. We will always embrace diversity, and strive for equity and inclusion. We welcome people of all backgrounds, identities, sexual orientations, gender identities, cultures, and beliefs. Self-Designed Life is proudly LGBTQ+-affirming.

SECULAR AND RESPECTFUL
Our program is intentionally free from religious teachings or expectations. Participants are welcome regardless of their faith, spirituality, or lack thereof. We create space for people healing from religious trauma as well as those who simply prefer a non-religious environment.

COMMUNITY
Healing doesn't happen in isolation. We believe safe relationships, shared experiences, and mutual encouragement create lasting change.

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE
We believe survivors are more than what happened to them. By challenging stereotypes and misconceptions, we strive to foster a world where Survivors are recognized for their resilience, leadership, wisdom, and potential, and not defined by their trauma.

LIFE BEYOND SURVIVAL
Our goal isn't simply helping people survive difficult experiences. It's supporting them as they build lives filled with purpose, connection, and joy.

I will not rescue you, for you are not powerless.
I will not fix you, for you are not broken.
I will not heal you, for I see you, in your wholeness.
I will walk with you through the darkness,
As you remember your light.
